Strasbourg – Belgium: Euthanasia Case Accepted by the European Court for Human Rights
The long-awaited case by Tom Mortier against LEIF (pro-euthanasia lobby group) Oncologist Wim Distelmans has been accepted for investigation by the European Court for Human Rights. Many hope that it might finally put a break on the flood of euthanasia cases executed under questionable circumstances in Belgium. Mr. Mortier’s 64-year old mother struggled with depression. Her own doctor refused euthanasia, so she turned to other physicians, one of whom was Distelmans, the President of the Federal Euthanasia Commission. The argument is that the Belgian State, having the task of protecting its citizens, did nothing to protect the life of Mrs. Mortier.
